The Horizon Report names six "technologies to watch" that they predict will have significant impact on higher education within three adoption horizons over the next one to five years. The 2009 report names these technologies and adoption horizons:

- cloud computing - one year or less
- geo-everything - 2 to 3 years
- personal web - 2 to 3 years
- semantic-aware applications - 4 to 5 years
- smart objects - 4 to 5 years
The 2008 report named these technologies:

- Social Operating Systems
